Not only can I not remember the songs, I couldn't tell you where one ended and the next began if I was to hear them now. They do mesh well with the on-screen action, but often just reduced to essentially white noise. Unfortunately, none of the songs are catchy enough to be memorable. ![]() Sound EA actually held a contest for unknown and underground bands, offering the winners a spot on the soundtrack of what would become Jailbreak. It's when you combine these fantastic elements with the rest of the graphics that you really get a good picture of what COULD have been done to clean everything else up. Small touches in the animations, like the back wheel lifting off the ground after slamming the breaks, or the way the rider eases into his/her most streamlined position on straight-aways is great. The riders and bikes, on the other hand, look great. Everything from the road to the buildings, cars to sky looks like it was dithered down to about a 64-color palette (and in the age of Crash and Spyro, we all know that simple textures can look good, even flat shaded polys can suffice in some cases). Now I understand that the graphic style of the Road Rash games is meant to be gritty and a little dark, but EVERYTHING looks like sandpaper. The in-game visuals so closely resemble the old 16-bit game that I had to actually whip out the old Genesis version to make sure they were any better (they were, but not by much). Unfortunately, the interface is about the only graphical area that will garner any positive comments. Graphics Jailbreak's interface is simple, and uncumbersome, offering all the info you need on-screen without any real hunting. There's even an option to have a buddy ride shotgun in a sidecar, dealing the smack down while you handle the driving. What's more, Jailbreak offers the option of combos and multiple styles of attack with which to unload your choice of 9 weapons (including a super weapon that delivers a one-hit knockoff). Nothing beats the feeling you get after watching your best friend (or roommate, as the case may be) meet first your fist/chain/club/crowbar/whatever, then the pavement. The real beauty of this series, however, has always been the multiplayer. Sure, the scenery changes at the start and finish, but the open road in between can usually be categorized as desert, city streets, or open country roads. For instance, you might travel from downtown to the lighthouse, or from the lighthouse to the dockyards, but the overall track still feels the same. While it appears there are quite a few tracks, they're actually just various locales on a map linked by a stretch of road. The single player game offers the chance to either stick to your roots as a hog- or crotch rocket-riding biker (Jail Break mode), or take to the streets as the nightstick wielding long arm of the law (Five-O mode). The new bikes you earn as you rise through the ranks do feel different (this can range from tighter control to faster acceleration to higher top speed), especially after you've spent a fair amount of time on your old bike. As you race, you'll earn better bikes and weapons, but the competition gets the same benefits. Now depending on the gang you pick at the start of the game, you will either control a bad ass hog, or a slick, speedy crotch rocket. The whole goal behind Jailbreak is to rise in rank through one of 2 gangs you pick until you can finally lead the charge to break the king of all bikers, Spaz out of jail, hence the title Road Rash: Jailbreak. Road Rash wouldn't work if not for the perfect balance of racing and combat, and I'm proud to say that Jailbreak delivers, with the small addition of combos to the combat side and upgradeable bikes to boot. Neither element is all that good by itself, but it's when they're brought together, like that prodigious moment when peanut butter met chocolate, that they become something truly greater than the sum of their parts. Gameplay Road Rash is, at its heart, just a simple beat-em-up and a racer. Road Rash: Jailbreak is fun, but not in the same way it used to be. Everything that makes up Road Rash is here, but it's somehow lost its soul along the way. It's all there, but with little in the way of innovation or originality. The control is there, the fighting is there, the speed is there, the crappy framerates are there, and the gritty graphics are there. It's as if the game was ripped directly from the cart I spent so many years neigh-umbilically attached to, and plopped onto a CD. ![]() ![]() If you already have Sleeping Dogs, things are a little trickier. #Sleeping dogs definitive edition upgrade plus£20 for an improved Sleeping Dogs plus all of its DLC is a really good deal, not least because it’s such a fine game. Despite having a few flaws and issues, it offers improved controls, an interface and HUD resolution that’s more appropriate to PC, some graphical effects that I personally like (although they’ll almost certainly prove divisive), and proper integration of the DLC packs into gameplay. ![]() If you haven’t played Sleeping Dogs, then I have absolutely no problem in recommending Definitive Edition to you. That guy in the background spent quite awhile walking into the little raised bit. I can be certain that your closet doesn’t start with 20,000 bits of clothing in it, though. Again: it’s been awhile since I played the original, and I’ve only spent a couple of hours with Definitive Edition, so I can’t be entirely certain. Now it actually seems to be integrated into the game itself, with bits and pieces unlocking as you progress through the storyline, and I think a few bits have been moved to shops. Previously the Sleeping Dogs DLC was a wee bit game-breaking, giving you access to a vast amount of experience, clothing, and vehicles instantly, which rather devalued the game’s Hong Kong Dollars because you rarely needed to pay for anything. The DLC also seems to be integrated much, much better than before, too. This also means that your “Use” key is now E, which makes a hell of a lot more sense for talking to people, entering vehicles, and the like. The counter change has actually screwed me up a lot, but that’s probably just me. Counter-attack is now E instead of the right mouse button, with said button now a lock-on button you can hold down to focus on one particular enemy. Your run key is now bound to shift instead of space. #Sleeping dogs definitive edition upgrade PcThe default PC controls are significantly more sensible, at least. I can guarantee it feels better than this, at least. All I can really say is that Sleeping Dogs was at the settings I found playable, and then I matched Definitive Edition to those. My computer was almost certainly doing stuff in the background, which may also account for some of the numbers. It’s worth noting that these were never intended to be super-scientific benchmarkings, mind. On the other hand, I can’t see much of a visual distinction between SSAO on Normal and High. Minimum FPS takes a hefty hit but Maximum actually goes up, and the average doesn’t drop by much. …benchmarking that’s really rather similar to the original game. ![]() If I put SSAO to High and disable V-sync, then we actually wind up with… There might be an argument that Definitive Edition is slightly better optimised, in fact. As far as I’m concerned, though, the two are practically identical: at my chosen settings neither drops into unplayable range, and both maintain roughly the same average framerate. So the original game dropped lower, but also managed a higher maximum FPS and a higher average FPS… by 0.8. Again, Sleeping Dogs is at the top, and Definitive Edition is below. The new effects don’t seem to adversely impact performance, though. I prefer the general effect of the way Definitive Edition looks, but I imagine there are those who’ll prefer the original. Some of it’s a matter of pure taste, though. That said, there are a few things the original game “seems” to do better – the sign directly above the shop entrance on the far right looks a bit sharper in the original, but that might simply be because it’s lit, and thus it has the soft blurring effect from lighting in Definitive Edition. The big difference is the lighting, with Definitive Edition having more of a soft glow coming from things like the streetlights. (I’d like to be more accurate, but I took a lot of screenshots at different settings.) Sleeping Dogs is at the top, and Definitive Edition is below, and I’m about 99% sure these are taken with the same graphical settings. So, here’s a night-time shot from the benchmarking, from both games. The pics below are taken with Quality Anti-Aliasing at High, Shadow Resolution at High, Shadow Filtering at High, SSAO at Normal, V-Sync on, Quality Motion Blur at High, World Density at Extreme, the FPS limiter off, and (in Sleeping Dogs) the High-Res Textures turned on. ![]() You can’t get perfect matches, because different NPCs will load into different places and perform different actions, but you can get some damn close pics of the environment.įor what it’s worth, I spent awhile trying to set up the display options to be the same between both games. Both games have a benchmark tool in the Advanced Display Options, and this actually lets us do some side-by-side comparison shots. Now, onto something a bit more interesting: the benchmark. ![]() ![]() The new melee combat system also helps with character buffs, such as returning a sliver of health or gun ammo after every second hit, so you can get into a nice, fast-paced rhythm of shooting, melee strikes, buffs, magic and class skills to really just jazz during each enemy encounter. In true RPG style, Wonderlands even has all-new character stats, such as strength and constitution, which players can level up using ‘hero points’ to give them a boost, like more health or reduced spell cooldown time. We also have six player classes to choose from and later on you can choose a secondary class, which are all completely independent of how your character looks and have their own skill trees.” “You can customise your face, you’ve got a couple of body types to choose from, your voice, your personality, so there are lots of ways to customise how your character looks. “The first part is your character’s aesthetics,” Belmore explained. The biggest change in Wonderlands is the new character creator. That experience and the team’s genuine love for tabletop RPGs and fantasy video games helped them kick-off what looks like a deep and wildly imaginative new entry to the Borderlands series. In the early days, the project leads at Gearbox got into the groove by playing several rounds of the real Bunkers & Badasses tabletop game by Nerdvana, although Cox pointed out that none of the storylines the sourcebook will feature in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. It’s definitely a far grander experience than the team could have achieved in a DLC expansion, so in many ways, this game is all about the members of Gearbox cutting loose with their wild ideas and injecting their own love of RPGs into the Borderlands formula. #Tiny tina borderlands 2 fullHe wasn’t over-selling the team’s ambition, either, as Wonderlands is absolutely rammed full of new gameplay mechanics, character customisation options, tonnes of weapon variety and much more. “For us, I think the potential for a fantasy looter-shooter is so much more than a DLC.” ![]() “We were inspired by Assault on Dragon Keep to take that tabletop vibe of a ‘game within a game’ into its own standalone thing,” Cox explained. They told me that the idea for the project went all the way back to the Borderlands 2 DLC expansion, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, which saw motor-mouthed explosions expert Tina running a tabletop RPG campaign in Bunkers & Badasses, which is Pandora’s version of Dungeons & Dragons. Who wouldn’t want to know more after that? We spoke with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ creative director, Matt Cox, and senior producer, Kayla Belmore.
